there really was nothing to it ......... i got into electronica | hiphop due to a dj spooky track [galactic funk (live from the black hole mix)] i had heard off a compilation i had laying around. from there, it was only a matter of time until i came across an album called 'endtroducing' by dj shadow ... nuff said :). i started off hitting a lot of the ninja tune & warp releases in the beginning because the music was really good & i was still in the process of seeing what the genre was capable of producing. thanks to the internet, mags like xlr8r & a dj'ing spot for my university, i was soon aware of a wide range of artists. i was always into miles, hancock, etc, so i became a big fan of the jazz-inspired side of electronica [dj krush, amon tobin, dj cam] as well as the so-called idm [aphex, arovane] & ambient [brian eno] genres. after hearing a lot of work offered by the audio dreggs, morr music & city centre offices labels... which combine simple, layered synths with skittery drum loops for the most part...i decided i might want to try tinkering around & see what i could do. i got my first piece of equipment, a mid-80's roland drum machine as well as a roland mc 303 groovebox thru ebay, soon picking up a few older synths at used music merchandise shops. i tried out a few computer programs & eventually settled with cool edit pro because of its simplicity. going with sort of a plug in & record whatever works approach, the tracks vary depending on what i was in the mood for at the time (musically) i guess. i was part of a an online dj shadow related 'community' for a few years (influx - now defunct i believe) where most of us produced in one way or another, so i got to do remixes, get remixed & hear tunes from people all around the world that way. as of now, im basically just looking forward to getting more equipment eventually, collaborating when possible & seeing what else is possible with a drum machine, samples & synths.
